Nearly 2 1/2 years after his latest album Tempest- Bob Dylan made another unexpected turn in his career by releasing a cover album of songs popularized by the great Frank Sinatra. Who would have seen this coming? Dylan was a big Sinatra fan- he even attended Frank’s funeral in 1998. When recording this album of Sinatra standards he went to the studio where Sinatra recorded some of his greatest music- Capitol Studio B. This is a very strong album of covers- who would have guessed that in all Dylan would end up recording three albums of American Standards? The only reason I rank the albums this low-is that I value albums of Dylan written material over covers.
Of the three albums of standards that Dylan recorded this was the most successful- going to #1 in the UK and #7 on the US album charts. Favorite songs on Shadows In The Night- “I’m A Fool To Want You”, “Some Enchanted Evening”, ‘That Lucky Old Sun” and “Autumn Leaves”- although I’d say there isn’t a bad track on the album.
I can’t think of two voices more different than each others. Dylan’s voice still sounds pretty good here (for him.)
I remember Bob singing a number from this record for one of Letterman’s last shows – The Night We Called It a Day, a fitting choice
Have had this bracketed for a long time still havent pulled the trigger.
