- Another plane crash- this time a chartered airplane carrying 14 members of the Wichita State University football team and head coach Ben Wilson. The group had been traveling to play against Utah State University in a game scheduled for the next afternoon.
- Pink Floyd’s album Atom Heart Mother which became their first number one album in the UK was released on this day. They still hadn’t caught on in the US- where it peaked at #55.
- Talk show host Kelly Ripa was born in Berlin, New Jersey.
Wow. I don’t remember the plane crash. I was only four.
It’s been a day of emotion here in Wichita. Thank you for including the plane crash. I was a little kid in eastern Kansas, but I can still picture the newspaper headline that next morning, and the entire state being stunned.
I remember this crash- and the Marshall University football crash in the same era.
