- A big funeral in Egypt- an estimated five million mourners- more than one-eighth the entire population of Egypt flood onto the streets of Cairo to witness the 15 mile long funeral procession for President Gamal Abdel Nasser- who died of a heart attack Monday at the age of 52.

- Curtis Mayfield leaves The Impressions for a solo career.

- Jimi Hendrix is buried at Greenwood Cemetery at Dunlop Baptist Church in Seattle. Miles Davis, Eric Burdon, Johnny Winter and members of Derek and The Dominoes are among the mourners attending.
- The final game at old Connie Mack Stadium in Philadelphia- the Phillies beat the Montreal Expos 2-1- after the game fans take over the field and destroy the it. Connie Mack Stadium opened in 1909 as Shibe Park and over the years was the home of the Philadelphia Athletics 1909-1954 and the Phillies 1938-70. The NFL’s Philadelphia Eagles also played there in 1940, 1942-57.
