Back in January 1973 Stevie went to #1 with “Superstition”- his second a decade after his first “Fingertips”- there wouldn’t be a long wait for #3- four months later he goes to #1 with “You Are The Sunshine Of My Life”- another single from his groundbreaking Talking Book album. The single was nominated for a Grammy for Song of the Year. He did win with this song for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance. Rolling Stone ranked it at #287 in their 500 Greatest Songs Ever list. The song was written for the sunshine in Stevie’s life at that point- Syreeta Wright who he married in 1970. She was a secretary at Motown who co-wrote “Signed, Sealed, Delivered” with Stevie. The marriage didn’t last long.
Great, great song as most of his singles in 70s were. Can gripe about his 80s output (and I have, truth be told) but what a legacy of so many great songs from early on in his career.
