1973 had 27 #1 hits- and many were excellent- but in looking over the list- clearly this one stands alone as the best of a strong bunch. Guitarist Jeff Beck a fan of Stevie’s was involved in the Talking Book- and part of the deal was Stevie would write a song for him- that song was “Superstition.” Beck was going to release the song first but Motown head Berry Gordy was convinced that this would be a big hit and increase album sales so it ended up being released first. Rolling Stone ranked it #74 in their 500 Greatest Songs ever list.
This song really has a great beat.
One of the best singles ever.
Cool song…I only recently realized what a clavinet was & how it made that song. I used to think it was all some odd funky guitar.
Wow you have taught me about an amazing new instrument,
yeah, see if you can find a video of him playing the song- it’s very cool, looks like a little electric piano but he kind of rolls his hands over it instead of hitting specific keys.
I just watched a video of him playing superstition on Soul Train. Amazing.
Love Stevie Wonder and love this song.
Definitely one of Stevie Wonder’s signature song and one of the grooviest tunes I know, in large part because of this great clavinet part!
