Hans Remembers- Friday August 14, 1970- 50 Years Ago.

- Stephen Stills was arrested for cocaine and barbiturates after being arrested in a San Diego area hotel after being found crawling incoherently in a corridor. He would be released on bail.

- No cyclamates- I can remember many advertisements back in the day making that claim. On this day all diet foods and drinks with sodium cyclamate -an artificial sweetener were banned in the United States. The United States Food and Drug Administration gave retailers 18 days to sell or remove their remaining stock of the cyclamate-sweetened diet products by September 1. In 1969 it was found in a study that it caused cancer in laboratory animals.
At that time, the whole band of CSNY was zonked out on dope. I remember the blurb in the paper about this. Graham Nash, in an interview a few years ago remarked that it was a huge effort for them to record anything because of the drug abuse between the 3 of them. All this was fairly typical back in that time. Now they are old men, and look back on those times, if they can remember.
I still can’t believe Crosby is still living.
Ah, crawling incoherently down the corridor. Brings back fond memories of my old hippie days!
That’s funny.
I remember the Stills arrest was a month before I started school at my new alternative “progressive” high school. I was scared but still excited.
I’m re-reading the Nash book. He seems to be a nice guy but very idealistic…over the top. His Crosby stories are incredible…like you said…hard to believe he is alive.
I’ve read a ton about CSN&Y and Crosby and Nash have inferred that Stills had aspirations of being a HUGE star along the lines of a Clapton or a Springsteen. The man certainly had the talent, but he short-circuited his career via drugs and alcohol. I’ve read that during the CSN&Y 1974 “Doom Tour” Stills had ongoing delusions of being a Vietnam War vet.
