Hans Remembers- Friday July 31, 1970- 50 Years Ago.

• Chet Huntley the news anchor for NBC retired from full-time broadcasting. He had David Brinkley had first done The Huntley -Brinkley Report on October 29, 1956. My father always watched Uncle Walter -but when I stayed at my grandparents- my grandfather was Huntley- Brinkley. They would always sign off with ” Goodnight Chet, Goodnight David.”

• By a vote of 17 to 6 the Israeli cabinet of ministers led by Prime Minister Golda Meir voted to accept a U.S. government peace proposal for a three month ceasefire in the War of Attrition that had continued after the 1967 Six Day War and a partial pullback of Israeli forces from occupied territory. One of the six dissenters was future prime minister Menahem Begin- resigned from the Meir cabinet in protest.

• A tradition for 238 years ended- the daily drink of rum for British sailors ended as the Royal Navy ended the rum ration.
• The 37th College All-Star Game was played at Soldier Field in Chicago with the Super Bowl Champion Kansas City Chiefs crushing the team of College All-Stars 24-3.

• Walter Briggs Jr. who had owned the Detroit Tigers from 1952-56 died at the age of 58.

• Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback, coach and owner Jimmy Conzelman died at 72- he had owned the Chicago Cardinals.

• Wayne Simpson- the rookie sensation for the Cincinnati Reds who was 14-3 in the first four months of his rookie season- tore his rotary cuff- he would come back to pitch again in the big leagues but was never the same. He was only 21 when he was injured. The Reds had a lot of bad luck with pitchers in the late 60’s to mid 70’s.
