Al Green had 13 Top 40 hits 1971-76- with ‘Let’s Stay Together” being his only #1 hit- Green wrote the lyrics to the song. He wrote the lyrics in 5 minutes. Green didn’t want to record it and argued about it with Willie Mitchell for a couple days before finally giving in. It took about 100 takes of the song before Green was happy with what he heard. Rolling Stone ranked it at #60 in their 500 Greatest Songs Ever list. When I hear the song- I think of it on the soundtrack of Pulp Fiction.
I love Al Green’s music! He’s got a golden voice. This is one of my favorites of his.
I’d agree with the “A+”… one of best soul songs of that decade.
Love the soulfulness of Green’s voice!
Such a great song, and I cannot believe he didn’t want to record it!
This and his other output are some good listening
