Hans Remembers- Saturday July 11, 1970- 50 Years Ago.
- Accidents will happen but this was a bad one- The U.S. Air Foce launched an Athena V-123-D missile from Green River Launch Complex in Utah- and it veered off course and impacted 180 miles south of the border between the United States and Mexico. At the time it was reported to the press -no worries the missile was unarmed- it actually was a salted bomb carrying two vials of radioactive cobalt-57. The impact in the Chihuahuan Desert near Mapimi in Mexico’s Durango state would require years of cleanup.
- Andre Lurcat a French modernist architect died on this day at the age of 75.
Wow. Accident is an understatement.
I’ve never heard the term “salted bomb” before. Interesting!
OMG. Didn’t know about the missile. Damn.
