Archie Bell & The Drells and R&B band out of Houston burst out with a #1 hit with their first single “Tighten Up” which also went to #1 on the R&B charts. It is one of the earliest funk hits on the Billboard Pop chart. Rolling Stone ranked it at #265 in their 500 Greatest Songs Ever list. Archie Bell was drafted and was serving in Vietnam when “Tighten Up” took off and went to #1. In the beginning of the song Bell introduces the band as being from Houston, Texas- he was motivated to do this because he had heard a comment after the Kennedy assassination that ‘nothing good comes out of Texas”- Bell wanted the listeners to know where they came from and that they were good.
Prompted by your blog, Hans, my siblings and I have been doing The 30 Day Song of the Day Challenge to keep connected to one another during the quarantine. I chose this song for “a song from your preteen years”.
That is a good idea you have there!
