The American Top 40 replay on the 70’s on 7 is from the week of April 20, 1974. My worst year in my opinion for music since The Beatles arrived in America in 1964. A couple Beatles are on this countdown though- Paul and Ringo. 1974 in many cases seemed to be a year where on the countdown there would be familiar artists- but not their best. There are some pretty good songs on the chart this week though. And a rarity for the first half of the 70’s- no Osmonds or Tony Orlando and Dawn.

Terry Jacks was filling in for the Osmonds and Tony this week…they couldn’t make it. I never knew until recently that Brian Wilson worked on Seasons in the Sun for the Beach Boys…I don’t think even he could have saved it.
I think some of it… between 74-78 was the LA period with the drugs going around with the musicians. The music for some reason started to sound really slick…Rod Stewart comes to mind…and the bad disco came.
For some reason it seems that every time they play a AT40 from 1974- Seasons In The Sun is on it– it’s like that song must have spent 52 weeks in the Top 40.. Yes I don’t think even Brian at the top of his game could have saved that song!
For some reason that song resonates to some people even today…so many other songs to pick from and that one is the one that they zero in on.
I like some bad songs because of childhood but this isn’t one of them.
My sister in law loves the song because it has her name in it- Michelle. Yes there are some songs that I now wouldn’t think are good but they bring back good memories- totally agree.
Hooked On A Feeling deserves the F.
I count six nuggets of gold but that’s it.
1974- very mediocre
