The Song Of The Day Challenge for Day 1- A Song That Motivates You- the first that came to my mind- “Heroes” by David Bowie.

“Heroes” comes from the Bowie album of the same name. It was recorded during his ‘Berlin” period in the late 70’s- and was recorded entirely in Berlin. The song was written by Bowie and Brian Eno. The song was inspired by seeing Bowie’s producer and a lover embracing at the Berlin Wall. The song tells the story of two lovers one from East Berlin and the other from West Berlin. This was of course back in the days before the Berlin Wall went down. Music writer David Buckley has written that “‘Heroes'” “is perhaps pop’s definitive statement of the potential triumph of the human spirit over adversity”.

“Heroes” is a song whose stature has grown over time. Today of course it is recognized as one of Bowie’s greatest singles- but at the time of release it didn’t even crack the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States and #24 in the UK Singles Chart.  Rolling Stone Magazine ranked it at #46 in 2003 on their 500 Greatest Songs Ever list. In the UK NME ranked it the 5th Greatest Single of All-Time in 2002. In 2014 NME had it ranked as the #1 best Bowie song.
