  • Chancellor Willy Brandt of West Germany became the first West German Chancellor to visit East Germany-when he visited Erfurt a city which bordered both nations to meet with Willi Stoph the Chairman of the East German Council of Ministers– basically their Prime Minister. This marked the first meeting between heads of government of divided Germany since Brandt began the Ostpolitik policy of dialogue with the Communists. Brandt rejected Stoph’s demand of recognition of the Communist DDR but the leaders did agree that Stoph would travel to Kassel in West Germany in late May.

  • Cleveland Indian outfielder Ken “Hawk” Harrelson fractured his leg and would miss the entire 1970 baseball season.

  2. No relation to Woody- after his career he was a long time announcer for the Chicago White Sox.. was known during his playing days for the way he dressed- nehru jackets ..fancy lad.
