- The Beatles Ringo Starr made his first television solo appearance on Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In.
- The South American nation of Guyana which has been independent since 1966 commenced a presidential form of government at midnight when Sir Edward Luckhoo took office as the first President of Guyana. Prime Minister Forbes Burnham continued as the actual head of government.

That was so cute to see Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-in; I’d forgotten how very clever it was.
And watching Ringo was a joy!
