Written and produced by Smokey Robinson- “My Guy” was Mary Wells biggest hit- she had a dozen Top 40 hits- most of which came before “My Guy.” She was The Beatles favorite American singer- and they took her on one of their tours of the UK. She would have a troubled career and life- Motown screwed her over- imagine Berry Gordy doing that to anyone…. and she also had two failed marriages, drug problems and finally cancer. She died in 1992 at the age of 49. At her funeral Smokey Robinson gave a eulogy.
Even though the Barry Gordy/Motown formula was repetitive, I dig many of their tunes. They were well crafted songs with great grooves!
The ones to me that wore thin were The Supremes- those Holland-Dozier-Holland songs started to all sound the same. Of course it was money in the bank.
Used to belt this out with my sister on the walk to school.
I can see why The Beatles liked her enough to have her tour with them.
Boy does this song bring back memories.
