- There was a failed coup against President Ahmed Hassan al-Bakr in Iraq. The government was successful in suppressing the coup- then arrested an convicted- and then executed 22 people in the afternoon. Quick justice. Civilian plotters were hanged and military men were shot by a firing squad. The next day 18 more people were executed. President al-Bakr’s cousin was Saddam Hussein.
- Near Norfolk, Virginia the amphibious U.S. Navy cargo ship USS Yancey was blown from its moorings and struck an abutment- destroying a 375 foot section of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge.
Dang, that must have been a mighty wind to blow something like that from its moorings!
