The first Top 40 single for Santana. They would have 25 Hot 100 hits with 15 making the Top 40. They had two #1 hits “Smooth” 1999 and “Maria Maria” 2000. “Evil Ways” was on their debut album which came out in 1969 just weeks after their performance at Woodstock. Singing “Evil Ways” is Gregg Rolie a two time Rock Hall of Fame member- as a member of Santana and Journey. Journey is in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame? What! Band leader Carlos Santana sings back up on the song and of course plays the guitar solo.
Boy, do I love that classic Santana sound – what a kick-ass band they were! I was listening to Santana III just the other day. Santana is a very compelling debut with gems like Evil Ways, Jingo and Soul Sacrifice. From the first three albums, I think Abraxas is still my favorite.
I have never been that into Santana but can certainly understand their appeal.
I wouldn’t necessarily call myself an all out Santana fan either, but I do dig their first three albums. At the time, the idea to combine Afro Cuban music with rock was really something and cool.
I will give them another try. I do like some of the stuff I have heard by them.
I used to have Santana on the turntable quite a bit in those days.
A great tune off a great album. Timeless for CB
