Celtic Crush Sunday-“If I Should Fall From Grace With God”- The Pogues. I couldn’t go too long with this new feature without playing a song from The Pogues. There was a short window of time in the mid to late 80’s when The Pogues were contenders for the crown of Greatest Rock Band of the period.
The Pogues were an English Celtic Punk band originating from London. With their frontman Shane MacGowan they released five studio albums from 1984-90- then MacGowan left the band due to his drinking problems and that was the end of The Pogues rein near the toppermost of the poppermost.
“If I Should Fall From Grace With God”- from their third album of the same name-released in 1988 and was the follow up single to their Christmas single- and #2 UK hit “Fairytale Of New York” {I will wait until mid-December to feature that song.} It was written by Shane MacGowan. This song may sound familiar to you even if you’ve never heard it all the way though-it was used in a commercial for Subaru Forester. Great- fast paced
I love the sound of The Pogues. First heard them in “Grosse Pointe Blank” which has a killer soundtrack. They could only put so many songs on the album, but it should have been a 2-disc set.
Sadly another fella with a bad drinking problem- Shane MacGowan.
Ok, I’m not saying they are bad or anything, but I can’t see them as universally popular enough to have been the best band of the mid-late 80’s.
