Billboard #1 Hits: #72: “I Can’t Stop Loving You”- Ray Charles. June 2, 1962. #1 for 5 weeks. Record Company-ABC-Paramount. Written by Don Gibson. Genre: R&B, Country. Time: 2:37. B-side: “Born To Lose” Grade: A+
“I Can’t Stop Loving You” was written and originally released by country performer Don Gibson in 1957- as part of a double A sided single- “I Can’t Stop Loving You” and “Oh Lonesome Me” While “Oh, Lonesome Me” was the bigger success on the charts- it topped the country single chart for eight weeks and became Gibson’s only Top 10 hit on the Hot 100 Pop Charts- #7- I would think over the years without a double “I Can’t Stop Loving You” put more money in Gibson’s bank account- having been covered over the years by more than 700 artists. Whether this is true or not- Gibson claimed to have written both songs on the same day. If so few people have had a more productive day in their lives.
Ray Charles version of “I Can’t Stop Loving You”- which became his 3rd and final #1 hit on the Hot 100-[it also went to #1 on the UK Singles Chart} is certainly the go-to version of the song. It appeared on Charles groundbreaking album Modern Sounds In Country and Western Music- certainly a candidate for the best album of the early 1960’s. Ray Charles for my money is pound for pound the greatest and most versatile singer ever- he would sing and master any style of music. Back to “I Can’t Stop Loving You’- Rolling Stone Magazine ranked it at #164 on their 500 Greatest Songs Ever list and CMT ranked it at #49 on their 100 Greatest Country Songs list. Charles won a Grammy for his performance- Best R&B Recording.
My parents had his album “Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music”, so it’s one that I grew up loving.
Can’t beat being introduced to great music at a young age.
