Three Chords And The Truth: Essential Country Music Songs: “Lonesome 7-7203″- Hawkshaw Hawkins. The plane crash that killed the great Patsy Cline on March 3, 1963 also took the lives of two other country music stars- Cowboy Copas and Hawkshaw Hawkins. Hawkins was a member of The Grand Ole Opry and was the husband of another country star Jean Shepard. Hawkins dressed more conservative than most country stars of his day- and at 6’5” was an imposing figure on stage. His biggest hit came after his death- “Lonesome 7-7203″ which was written by the son of Ernest Tubb- Justin Tubb. ‘Lonesome 7-7203” would spend 25 weeks on the country music singles chart- and four weeks at #1.
He’s got a nice resonance to his voice.
