Three Chords and The Truth: Essential Country Music Songs: ” Lost Highway”- Hank Williams. I could easily fill a couple months just posting on essential songs recorded by The Hillbilly Shakespeare- Hank Williams his music is that important and critical to the history of country music. One of his best songs is one that he didn’t actually write- “Lost Highway” was written by a blind country singer-songwriter named Leon Payne in 1948- but it could have easily been a song that Hank could have written- it is one of those career and life defining songs by Hank.
Attached below is the story of Lost Highway and the lasting impact the song has had-
I think this is one of the first songs to mention rolling stone.
Good point!
Love this song. The line “a deck of cards and a jug of gin and a woman’s lies built this road of sin.” or Hank’s “just a deck of cards and a jug of wine and a woman’s lies make a life like mine.”
Just a wonderful line…either one
One of the greats, Hank Williams. He wrote his songs with heart and sang them with heart ❤
It’s funny to think of country western singers with the same “bad boy” or bad girl reps as rock stars. But yeah, one DOES think of hard drinking, hard living, cowboy hats and boots, people maybe getting into bar fights a lot, lol…..
Confused about Leon Payne from the article, tho: he actually hitched-hiked around and acquired random jobs while being COMPLETELY BLIND………??!!!
Most of the big stars in country music sure did live hard lives- drinking, hard living- many marriages.. good point!…. Payne must have had some help getting around I would think?
Jeez! I hope so! Make me feel like a total wuss, why don’t you!? 🙂
