363. “Wake Up”- The Chambers Brothers. Columbia. Soul . Written by Joel Hirshhorn and Marvin Hamlisch. B-side: “Everybody Needs Somebody.” The Chambers Brothers- George, Willie, Lester and Joe were Mississippi born brothers. They had 5 Hot 100 hit singles their biggest hit came in 1968 with “Time Has Come Today” #11. “Wake Up” was from the movie “April Fools” starring Jack Lemmon- it peaked at #92 and spent 2 weeks on the chart. 364. “In The Time Of Our Lives”- Iron Butterfly. Atco. Rock. Written by Doug Ingle and Ron Bushy. B-side:”It Must Be Love.” The second of two 1969 Hot 100 singles by Iron Butterfly- peaked at #96 and spent 2 weeks in the Hot 100. Grade: C

365. “Birds Of A Feather”- Joe South. Capitol. Country Rock. Written by Joe South. B-side:”These Are Not My People.” The second of three Hot 100 singles by the great songwriter Joe South in 1969- his biggest success came earlier in the year with “Games People Play.” “Birds Of A Feather” peaked at #96 and spent just one week on the chart. Grade: A.

366. “Pass The Apple Eve”- B.J. Thomas. Scepter. Pop. Written by Johnny Christopher and Mark James. B-side: “Fairy Tale Of Time.” The 2nd of 3 Hot 100 hits for B.J. Thomas in 1969- it peaked at #97 and spent 3 weeks on the chart. His big break through hit would be his next single- Raindrops Keep Fallin’ On My Head” later in the year which went to #1. Grade: C
I think the first one would be great to be programmed into an alarm clock. Can you imagine waking up to it every morning. The 2nd one has a certain atmospheric appeal to me. The 3rd one highlight’s South’s voice and songwriting skills. I’m surprised his name isn’t better known.
For a brief time in the late 60’s- South was as good of a songwriter as anyone going. I agree he should be better known!
