- Princeton University made history- the all-male Ivy League school went their first 233 years of their existence without women- on this day 171 young women joined the 4600 men who were already enrolled. The campus’ first dormitory for women was Pyne Hall.

- One of the giants of the U.S. Senate- Republican Everett Dirksen of Illinois- a senator since 1951 and Minority Leader since 1959 died at the age of 73- after suffering from a cardiac arrest while recovering from surgery six days earlier for lung cancer.
