The four singles today all entered the chart on June 21, 1969- none of them made the Top 40. “Moments To Remember”- The Vogues, ” Girl Your Too Young”- Archie Bell and The Drells, “The Feeling Is Right”- Clarence Carter and “”Feeling Alright”- Joe Cocker.

320. “Moments To Remember”- The Vogues. Reprise. Pop. Written by Robert Allen and Al Stillman. B-side: ‘Once In A While.” This song was originally a hit for The Four Lads in 1955 after it was taken to Perry Como and turned down. The Vogues version went to #47 and spent 5 weeks on the chart. They were on their last legs commercially at that point- they had 5 Hot 100 hits that year with only one making the Top 40. After 1969 they would never appear on the Hot 100 again. Grade: D+

321. ” Girl You’re Too Young”- Archie Bell and The Drells. Atlantic. Soul. Written by Archie Bell, Kenneth Gamble and Thom Bell. B-side: “Do The Hand Jive.” Archie Bell and The Drells went to #1 in 1967 with their first single “Tighen Up” and were never to come close to that success again. In all they had 4 Hot 100 singles and that was their only Top 40 hit. Grade: C

322.” The Feeling Is Right”- Clarence Carter. Atlantic. Soul. Written by George Jackson and Micky Buckins. B-side: You Can’t Miss What You Can’t Measure.” The same week that his wife at the time- Candi Staton entered the chart with “I’d Rather Be An Old Man’s Sweetheart.”- Carter entered with “The Feeling Is Right” -which peaked at #65 and spent 6 weeks on the chart. Carter put 17 singles in the Hot 100 from 1967-73 his biggest hit being ‘Patches” #4. Grade: A-
323. “Feelin’ Alright”- Joe Cocker. A&M. Rock. Written by Dave Mason. B:Side:”Sandpaper Cadillac.’ Written by Dave Mason of Traffic- it failed as a single to make the Hot 100 for Traffic. In 1969- Joe Cocker took it to #69 where it spent 6 weeks on the chart. It would be re-released in 1973 by Cocker and make it to #33. At the time of its original release Joe Cocker was a relative unknown that would change in a couple of months at Woodstock. Grade: A.
Clarence Carter…what a voice. He could make almost any song good.
I remember The Vogues’ “Turn Around Look at Me” because I had to do this group synchronization in gym class in middle school to it. Middle school for me was a real nightmare, but I do like the song. Feelin Alright has such a memorable intro and he does a great job performing the song.
I don’t have a memory of the song but I agree with you about Middle School being a nightmare!
