This Must Be The Place: “I Left My Heart In San Francisco”- Tony Bennett. As long as I am doing songs featuring places in California I may as well continue with a big one- “I Left My Heart In San Francisco’- which is Tony Bennett’s signature song. I see that the 93 year old has been forced to cancel some tour dates due to illness- a virus, let’s hope he makes a speedy recovery.

” I Left My Heart In San Francisco” was written by George Cory and Douglass Cross. The song was originally written for Claramae Turner who would use it in her shows but she never got around to recording it. It fell into the hands of Tony Bennett- before that it was given to Tennessee Ernie Ford but he wasn’t interested in the song.  Bennett recorded it and it was released as a b-side- the a-side “Once Upon A Time” was ignored and DJ’s flipped it over and started to play “I Left My Heart In San Francisco”- which would win Bennett two Grammy’s for Record of the Year and Best Male Solo Vocal Performance. On the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart it peaked at #19.
