Came across this article in Texas Monthly about the life and tragic death of Buddy Holly- the plane crash in Iowa that cold night in February 1959.

  1. Excellent article. Good journalism. So Ed Sullivan was opposed to what Buddy was going to sing? So strange as who the passengers were going to be kept changing. Such a sick thing, the “disabled” pilot taking them. Why didn’t Dwyer fly them under those weather conditions?

  2. Thanks, Hans… good article. I did read where the Big Bopper was exhumed by his son. The picture is eerie. His 48 year old son Jay is looking at his dad who was 28 when he died for the first time…I think Jay was born right after The Big Bopper died.

    • The one thing in the article that ticks me off- is the guy who owned the plane- making up other reasons for the crash- a fight on board, buddy holly shooting his gun etc. He should be ashamed of himself.

    • That is terrible…just to pass the buck. I’ve read briefly about a gun before….it never made sense to me at all.
It must have spooked Allsup and Jennings the rest of their lives.

  3. Thanks so much for posting the link to that article, Hanspostcard. Fascinating. I really don’t think it matters what caused the plane crash or who was to blame. As fans of those artists and their music, we should concentrate our energies on keeping their music alive and reminding today’s musicians of the enduring influence of their work.
