MY MUSIC LISTENING JOURNAL: DAY 529: THURSDAY AUGUST 1, 2019

ALBUMS-

Bruce Springsteen - Nebraska.jpg

  • BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN: NEBRASKA: 1982: FOLK: 5 STARS OUT OF 5 STARS: VINYL: This album upon release threw a lot of Boss fans for a loop- not what they were expecting- a dark- folk oriented album. On my Mount Rushmore of favorite Bruce albums.

  • BLONDIE: EAT TO THE BEAT: 1979: NEW WAVE: 4 1/2 STARS OUT OF 5 STARS: VINYL: “Dreaming” is one of my favorite songs from the 80’s and far and away my favorite Blondie tune- must have been to much rock for the singles chart-only making it to #27 and it was the only hit on this album- which was the follow up to the mega selling Parallel Lines. I like this album just as much as I do Parallel Lines.

Dedication GUSB cover.jpg

  • GARY U.S. BONDS: DEDICATION: 1981: POP. ROCK .  3 1/2 STARS OUT OF 5 STARS: VINYL: Little Stephen and his buddy Bruce grew up in the early 60’s listening and loving Gary U.S. Bonds music. A couple decades later- Bonds career was pretty much forgotten and Stephen and Bruce got him back in the studio-and lent a hand in making this album. He even had his first Top 40 hit in nearly 20 years with “This Little Girl” #11- written by The Boss.

KinksLowBudget.jpg

  • THE KINKS: LOW BUDGET: 1979: ROCK . 4 STARS OUT OF 5 STARS: VINYL: Ray Davies has always been known for his nostalgic writing- this album deals a lot with the current issues of that time- not so much with the past. One of the best chart performing albums in the US by the band. Has a harder edge than the previous album Misfits.

Album Stewart John - California bloodlines cover.jpg

  • JOHN STEWART: CALIFORNIA BLOODLINES: 1969: FOLK . 5 STARS OUT OF 5 STARS: VINYL:  Considered by many to be John Stewart’s masterpiece. I saw it in a book of someone’s Top 200 albums- back in the late 70’s- it sounded interesting so I tracked down a copy. Great album- ten years before Stewart turned music into Gold.

  • THE BEATLES: PLEASE PLEASE ME: 1963: ROCK AND ROLL. 5+ STARS OUT OF 5 STARS: VINYL:

Bodeans-lhsd.jpg

  • BODEANS: LOVE & HOPE& SEX & DREAMS :  1986: ALTERNATIVE ROCK: 5 STARS OUT OF 5 STARS: IPOD: A brilliant debut not a song on it that I don’t like. A hidden gem.

  • WILSON PICKETT: A MAN & A HALF: THE BEST OF WILSON PICKETT: 1992: SOUL: 5 STARS OUT OF 5 STARS: DOUBLE ALBUM: IPOD: A great career retrospective- the first disc is a lot stronger than the second disc but so go a lot of careers.

  1. I remember some clown on a local tv show smashed the Nebraska album on air. I guess he didn’t like it as much as we did. The Kinks album got a lot of spins in my pad. So did the Us Bonds. Very good record with the E Streeters supplying the back up. And you’re right about the Bodeans album. It is a “gem”. I might have to dive into the Stewart album on your recommendation. Good stuff.

    • Thanks– Yes I remember a lot of people being disillusioned for some reason about Nebraska. It was different and not what they expected. I think our opinion on the album- is now the general opinion– and I bet a lot of the people who were negative about it back then have changed their opinions now…
