The Sounds Of Summer- Day 38 of 95- “Up On The Roof”- The Drifters. The Drifters are another group that has that summer feel about their music. Earlier in the summer I featured “Under The Boardwalk”- today’s song is another summer classic -“Up On The Roof.” Written by the great songwriting couple Gerry Goffin and Carole King and produced by another great songwriter team of Jerome Leiber and Michael Stoller- “Up On The Roof” was a #5 hit in 1963 for The Drifters. The song brings to mind the city in which Goffin and King lived and worked- New York City. The beach in this song isn’t the beach- but on the roof where at you can go to escape all your worries for a while. Gerry Goffin would call “Up On The Roof” the favorite of all the song lyrics that he wrote. Goffin and King were both in their very early 20’s when they wrote this remarkable song. Rolling Stone Magazine ranked it #114 on their 500 Greatest Singles of All- Time list. The Drifters were proof that great pop music did exist in the late 50’s and early 60’s before the British Invasion. The song has been covered by others- including James Taylor but none are in the same ballpark as The Drifters.
I dont get over here enough. A nod to a song like this is a good place to get back here. good one.
Thank you.
