203. ” Oh Happy Day”- Edwin Hawkins Singers. Pavilion. Gospel. Soul. Written by Edwin Hawkins. B-side “Jesus Lover Of My Soul.” A gospel group out of Oakland, California- this was the only hit for the Edwin Hawkins Singers- by themselves- #4 and 10 weeks on the chart. Their other hit was with Melanie in 1970 “Lay Down {Candles In The Rain} #6.  Grade: A

 

 

 

204. ” Too Busy Thinking About My Baby”- Marvin Gaye. Tamla. Soul. Written by Norman Whitfield, Barrett Strong and Janie Bradford. B-side: “Wherever I Lay My Hat [That’s My Home.} Marvin’s first solo hit in 1969- it went to #4 and spent 15 weeks on the chart. In his career 1962-82 he had 56 Hot 100 singles with 40 making the Top 40. He had 3 #1’s “I Heard It Through The Grapevine”-1968, “Let’s Get It On”- 1973 and “Got To Give It Up”- 1977. 205. “Day Is Done”- Peter, Paul and Mary. Warner Brothers. Folk. Written by Peter Yarrow. B-side ” Make Believe Town.” The last single that Peter, Paul and Mary recorded -went to #21 and spent 10 weeks on the chart. Overall the iconic folk group had 20 Hot 100 singles with 13 making the Top 40. Their big year was 1963 when they had 2 singles reach #2 “Puff The Magic Dragon” and “Blowin’ In The Wind.” Grade: C
