“Time To Play B-Sides”- “Honey Don’t”- Carl Perkins. The Beatles had a number of influences from the 1950’s- a few of them have been highly celebrated like Elvis, Chuck Berry and Buddy Holly. They also had influences just as strong who aren’t as celebrated- one of those being Carl Perkins. Carl Perkins was one of those hillbilly cats who was discovered by Sam Phillips in Memphis at Sun. It was at a Carl Perkins session at Sun Studio- where the famous Million Dollar Quartet recording happened when Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash and Elvis all showed up and they started jamming. On the official studio albums during the first half of their career when they would fill out albums by covering other artists- the one who they covered more than anyone else- was Carl Perkins. “Everybody’s Tryin’ To Be My Baby”, ‘Matchbox”, and ‘Honey Don’t.’ Early on before The Beatles were The Beatles- John, Paul and George briefly all went by alias’ -who was George? Carl Harrison- Carl after Carl Perkins. Carl’s guitar playing was a huge influenced on George. The Beatles covering those Perkins songs not only helped keep Perkins and his music out there– it also made him money- he bought his parents a farm with the money he made due to The Beatles covers.
“Honey Don’t” is an excellent b-side- it was the b-side to Perkins greatest hit “Blue Suede Shoes”-[ the greatest version of Blue Suede Shoes- isn’t the cover by Elvis but Carl’s original.} On The Beatles cover- it is Ringo singing “Honey Don’t”
Thanks for posting this, didn’t know he existed, but great track!
