Hans Remembers- Headlines from 50 years ago today- Friday July 25, 1969-

• In what would be called the Nixon Doctrine- President Nixon on his tour of Asia remarked that ‘ I believe that the time has come when the United States, in our relations with all our Asian friends, be quite emphatic on two points- one, that we will keep our treaty agreements but two, that as far as the problems of internal security are concerned, as far as the problems of military defense- that the United States is going to encourage and has a right to expect that the responsibility for it taken by the Asian nations themselves.”

• A sobered up Ted Kennedy got on television in Massachusetts one week after his accident and neglect as Chappaquiddick Island caused the death of Mary Jo Kopechne- to seek the advice and opinion of his constituents as to whether he should resign from office. Earlier in the day he pleaded guilty in Dukes County, Massachusetts to leaving the scene of an accident and was given a suspended sentence of two months in jail and one year’s probation. Kennedy ended up staying in the U.S. Senate- and was re-elected time and time again until his death in 2009.

• Neil Young appeared on stage with Crosby, Stills and Nash at the Fillmore East in New York for the first time and ended up joining the band- off and on for the next three decades.

• The three day Seattle Pop Festival began- 70,000 would attend- among the acts appearing Chuck Berry, Tim Buckley, Led Zeppelin, The Byrds, Chicago, Ike and Tina Turner, Alice Cooper, The Doors, Guess Who, Bo Diddley and others.
