‘Time To Play B-sides”- “God Only Knows” -The Beach Boys. This has to rank as one of the most highly acclaimed songs to be on a B-side. “God Only Knows” was a b-side to the wonderful “Wouldn’t It Be Nice” which went to #8 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1966. Both songs were on The Beach Boys masterpiece- “Pet Sounds”- which is on every critics list of best albums of all times- if not at the very top. “God Only Knows” was written by Brian Wilson [ to be honest Pet Sounds isn’t The Beach Boys masterpiece- it’s Brian’s} and Tony Asher who wrote a lot of the lyrics for Brian for this album. “God Only Knows” is sung by Carl Wilson. Rolling Stone magazine has “God Only Knows” ranked at #25 on their 500 Greatest Songs Ever list. Rolling Stones has it among their 500 Songs That Shaped Rock and Roll. None other than Paul McCartney has called it his favorite song ever and said- “‘God Only Knows’ is one of the few songs that reduces me to tears every time I hear it. It’s really just a love song, but it’s brilliantly done. It shows the genius of Brian. I’ve actually performed it with him and I’m afraid to say that during the sound check I broke down. It was just too much to stand there singing this song that does my head in and to stand there singing it with Brian.” As a B-side “God Only Knows” reached #39 on the Billboard Hot 100.
What Paul said was the biggest compliment you could give…that is great.
A perfect song
I never knew this was a B side – surprised about that being that this is my favorite of any of their songs – and they have a lot of great classics!
One of my favorite songs of all time. I love the way you express what this song means to you and, vicariously, to all of us who love music, “…it reduces me to tears every time I hear it.” So true. There are no perfect people but there are perfect songs and this one of them.

Pam, very eloquently stated!
I think this was also one of the first if not the first song to use the word God in it’s title…maybe that is why it was a b-side?
Hans, this song has universal appeal with several others of their songs. The purity of the vocals and the harmonizing makes it sound celestial and spiritual. Paul’s quote really touches my heart.
