Time To Play B-Sides “Blue Sky”- Allman Brothers Band. The Allman Brothers were not a singles band- they only had three Top 40 singles and one huge hit “Ramblin’ Man #2 in 1973. A year earlier in 1972 “Melissa” went to #86-as a single- although it got a lot of play on album oriented radio then and over the years it wasn’t a hit. The B-side of “Melissa” was “Blue Sky”- written by Dickey Betts about his then girlfriend and future wife- Sandy “Bluesky” Wabegijig. This was the first song the Betts sang lead on for the Allman Brothers and he had wanted Gregg Allman to sing it but was encouraged by Duane Allman to do the singing. Betts and Duane Allman would alternate playing guitar on the songs lead. It would be one of the last recordings made by Duane Allman before his was tragically killed in a motorcycle accident. Both “Blue Sky” and “Melissa” would be released after Duane’s death on one of their most acclaimed albums Eat A Peach.
A nice toe tapper.
Oh but Melissa!!!! That one stabs me. Just within the past three months I’ve played it many times and made a short little 30 second video of my work surroundings will it’s playing.
That song carries me.
This one makes me smile every time I hear it. The guitars almost talk.
May be my favorite Allman Brothers song.
In September of 2007, my son took me to see The Allman Brothers for my birthday. One of my most cherished memories from that evening is of the two of us standing side by side and belting out the chorus of that song. Thanks for posting!
Glad to hear your memory- a great one!!
That’s awesome, Six Strings.
Oh how I love this song. The whole album is a work of art.
