“Time To Play B-Sides”- “The Man Who Sold The World”- David Bowie. Over the years I have run into a few people who think this was written by Nirvana. While they did cover it on their it extremely well on their Unplugged In New York album- it is a David Bowie song. It was the b-side to “Space Oddity” in 1973. “Space Oddity” went to #15 in 1973 while the b-side failed to chart-but it still became one of Bowie’s classic songs and for the longest time I had just assumed that it was a hit also.
I always liked Bowie but with his death three and a half years ago I came across a deeper appreciation for his career. Where I had considered him a B level rock star- I have changed my mind- he was an A level. His 70’s work was as good if not better than anyone during that period and I believe his past 70s work is underappreciated- simply because it wasn’t as great as his 70’s period.

I hate saying it because it makes it seem as if his death changed how I thought about him- I liked him- but since his death I put in a lot more time listening – reading about him and thinking – he certainly has shot up the charts in my estimation. I wish it didn’t take his death do to that though.
Some B sides are more interesting than the A side…This is excellent. The first thing I would do when I bought singles would be to flip them.
Oh yeah, Hans. Bowie is A level. He is so transcending, timeless. His music never sounds dated. It is always relevant.
He was ahead of his time.

I think he is going to be even bigger with future generations- as people continue to feel more and more isolated..

I dig Bowie’s early time until the mid ’70s (“Young Americans” album). While I also like select tunes he has published thereafter, I’m generally less fond of his post 1975 catalog. I’ve listened to Blackstar once or twice and it’s not for me. I do understand Bowie knew he was dying when recording this album. Still, it gives me the creeps.
