The Sounds Of Summer- Day 20 of 95- “Wipe Out”- The Surfaris. This instrumental by The Surfaris- a teenage band from Glendora, California went to #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the summer of 1963- kept out of the #1 slot by Little Stevie Wonder’s “Fingertips.” It would be their only Top 40 hit- unless you count 1966’s re-release of “Wipe Out” which went to #16. “Wipe Out” has been an enduring hit though- over the years it has been featured in over 20 movies and television shows. “Wipe Out” is a surfing term of course for falling off your surfboard. The songwriters were The Surfaris- Bob Berryhill, Pat Connolly, Jim Fuller and Ron Wilson. It is the bands manager-Dale Smallin who provides the opening laugh and “Wipe Out.”
Skating rink memories…
The sound of summer…
Everybody tried to drum this with their pencils on their books. It’s like french fries…I dare you to not like it?
I agree how could you not like it.
Wipe out is a human meme now stored in the collective unconscious database at this point….
Amazing drum beat. Tried to imitate it man times on my school desk.
In my day, if a band did NOT play ‘Wipe Out’, they didn’t get any jobs!!
Oh, yeah:
I like that National One Hit Wonder Day…which makes me think- Favorite One Hit Wonder?
Sounds like a post…
I have several faves, myself.
