‘TIME TO PLAY B-SIDES’- “I CAN’T STOP LOVING YOU”- DON GIBSON

“Time To Play B-Sides”- “I Can’t Stop Loving You”- Don Gibson. Don Gibson claimed that he wrote “Oh Lonesome Me” and “I Can’t Stop Loving You” if that is the case few artists in music ever had a more productive day. No doubt he could have lived off of the royalties from those two songs the rest of his life. “Oh Lonesome Me” in 1958 spent 8 weeks at the top of the country singles chart and was a crossover hit- peaking at #7 on the pop chart.  It would be his only Top 10 pop hit.  The b-side: “I Can’t Stop Loving You” was also a big success on the country singles chart #7 and #81 on the pop chart. In the long run while both songs have been covered by many artists- “I Can’t Stop Loving You” is the more successful one- being covered by more than 700 artists by the time Don Gibson passed away in 2003. The legendary Chet Atkins produced both sides of the single.  My favorite version of the song is the one Ray Charles took to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1962.

  1. Don Gibson’s A-side was an excellent production for it’s time, the B-side not so much. What Ray Charles did was turn it into a whole new, and amazing song.
