  1. Interesting that the writers by and large embrace most of the Beatles more commercial work.

Most pop writers and music critics love to disdain the popular Beatles songs in favor of the obscure. Almost it seems, as if to say, “I’m cooler than you. I know ‘Happiness is a Warm Gun.’”

    Refreshing.

    • I bet you asked a dozen people and you might get a dozen different answers-that is certainly a contender for the title.

  2. Hans, impossible to answer. What does matter is that, even today, their music evokes strong emotion in the listener. They are pure magic and I mean that most sincerely. These 4 were a heavenly convergence orchestrated by whoever/whatever it is that orchestrates. For that I am thankful.

    • I agree. Over the years I have heard so many different songs mentioned by folks as their ‘favorite’ Beatles song- some that would seem very unlikely to even be selected when compared to some of the others. Being a fanatic I am happy to see nearly 50 years after they broke up- they are still as big as they ever were- maybe even bigger.

  3. Ask me on 12 different days, and I will probably have 12–or more–different answers for you. However, if you include post-Beatles Beatles’ songs, I can only go with Imagine, though the best post-Beatles album by far is All Things Must Pass. Pre-post-Beatles, on most days, I believe the greatest song ever done by a Beatles’ era Beatle under the name The Beatles, in my very honest opinion, is Within You Without You.

    • Yes- I can’t argue with any of your comments- although I wouldn’t pick Within You Without You as the greatest I do like it a lot-but it does show that you ask a dozen people you get a dozen answers. I like that selection.

    • And not that anyone is interested, but I see any living being as having four parts: a body, an ego, a mind, and a spirit. The Beatles were so good because they were like a living being: Ringo was the body, Paul the ego, John the mind, and George the spirit. They were complete, even when they were breaking apart. By then each aspect had had time to learn to be itself, and was ready to set out on its own.
It is the spirit that holds the four aspects together, but likewise when the time comes it is the spirit that most needs to express itself. I believe George fulfilled that role wonderfully. He matured in a way none of the others did, and he needed the opportunity to give freedom to that expression. The ego and the mind had been overshadowing the spirit, trying to keep it in the background. That became impossible. And the world is better for it.

  4. Thanks for this article post. Gave me an excuse to rewatch for the millionth time the RRHOF set for George with MGGW and the way Prince just slays it with his solo. And poignant to watch now while both he and Tom Petty gone.

  5. Nobody lists the ones I like. I tend to go with the more sentimental ones: Something, Blackbird, Long and Winding Road…..
Also, I always thought it was the other way around: John was the ego and Paul was the brain…..?

  6. For us it would depend on the mood we are in. Such a vast catalogue to choose from, thanks goodness.
