MY MUSIC LISTENING JOURNAL: DAY 494: WEDNESDAY JUNE 26, 2019

ALBUMS

Jacksonbrownedebut.jpg

  • JACKSON BROWNE: JACKSON BROWNE: 1972: 4 1/2  STARS OUT OF 5 STARS: Clyde Jackson Browne’s debut album is also one of his best.  The album is also known by some as “Saturate Before Using” because the words are on the album cover. The most known song on the album is  Doctor My Eyes” which was a hit but other outstanding tunes- “Rock Me On The Water” “Jamaica Say You Will” and “Song For Adam.”

  • BUCK OWENS: DUST ON MOTHER’S BIBLE: 1966: 4 STARS OUT OF 5 STARS: What I like about this album- is it doesn’t sound like a gospel album- it sounds like Buck and The Buckaroos in their prime- which in 1966 is what they were. The album went to #1 on the country chart.

Don Ho's Greatest Hits (Vinyl, LP, Compilation) album cover

  • DON HO: DON HO’S GREATEST HITS: 1970: 3 STARS OUT OF 5 STARS:  When I saw this the other day for .94 cents and saw the album was in perfect shape I just had to buy it.  Don Ho- Tiny Bubbles is the song I knew – but the album actually isn’t half bad. “Tiny Bubbles” was his only Hot 100 single #57 in 1966. The boy born Rocco Lampone in New Jersey-brother of Vito Lampone [ later known as Julio Inglesias} made out well as an Hawaiian singer.

Neil diamond moods.jpg

  • NEIL DIAMOND: MOODS: 1972: 4  STARS OUT OF 5 STARS:  I own a number of Neil Diamond Best of- Greatest Hits packages- but only a couple of his later studio albums- I saw a bunch of them in the .94 cent bin the other day and had to buy them- 1970’s albums- Moods was his most successful album on the charts up to that point- and it was nominated for a Grammy for Album of the Year. “Song Sung Blue” and “Play Me” were the hits and overall a pretty good album.

  • BOB DYLAN: BRINGING IT ALL BACK HOME: 1965: 5 STARS OUT OF 5 STARS: Dylan’s 5th album with a great album cover–is half acoustic and half rock- and paves the way for his rock classics Highway 61 Revisited and Blonde On Blonde which were to come. The best 3 album run of Dylan’s career those three albums.  “Subterranean Homesick Blues”, “She Belongs To Me”, “Maggie’s Farm”, “Gates Of Eden”, “It’s Alright { I’m Only Bleeding}, It’s All Over Now, Baby Blue” and “Mr. Tambourine Man” all classics.

  • BOB DYLAN: HIGHWAY 61 REVISITED:1965: 5 STARS OUT OF 5 STARS: 5 months after releasing Bringing It All Back Home- Dylan drops Highway 61 Revisited- maybe his greatest album-it’s either this, Blonde On Blonde or Blood On The Tracks. Like A Rolling Stone is my favorite single ever- and it opens the album.

Live at the Hollywood Bowl.jpg

  • THE BEATLES: LIVE AT THE HOLLYWOOD BOWL:  4 1/2 STARS OUT OF 5 STARS: The album released in the late 70’s- re-released with more songs to go along with Ronnie Howard’s fine documentary on The Beatles touring years. Over the years I have heard the question asked- which Beatles concert would you have wanted to have been at? The famous roof top performance near the end? In the audience at the Ed Sullivan Show? At The Hollywood Bowl? At Shea Stadium? I would choose seeing them before they made it- at The Cavern in Liverpool or in Hamburg, Germany.

    • I am going to have to sit down and go through these Neil albums I picked up- and see what I am missing- in the next few weeks I plan on listening to all the ones I bought. Just listened to The Jazz Singer– have you seen the movie? Any good?

    • The movie is supposed to be terrible, although Laurence Olivier playing Diamond’s father sounds interesting. The Jazz Singer is a good comeback after some really bad late 1970s adult contemporary- got a bit of that Bang rock n roll in there.

    • I was surprised I did like the album. You are right that was in his easy listening period I wasn’t expecting a good album.

  1. Will have to get that Buck Owens. Maybe there will be a Buck Owens week in the near future 🙂 It knocks me over how many good songs Dylan has done. Even one would make the average songwriter be happy for life.

    • I think there are great songs Dylan has done- that haven’t as yet gotten the recognition they deserve but maybe will in future generations.
