122. “Playgirl”- Thee Prophets. Kapp. Pop. Written by Linda &Keith Colley. B-side: Patricia Ann. This is the only Hot 100 entry by Thee Prophets–yes it’s Thee- my finger wasn’t stuck on the e key there. “Playgirl” peaked at #49 and spent 8 weeks in the Hot 100. Thee Prophets were a pop-rock quartet from Milwaukee. Grade: C.

123. “Didn’t You Know {You’d Have To Cry Sometime}- Gladys Knight and The Pips. Soul. Soul. Written by Nickolas Ashford and Valerie Simpson. B-side: “Keep An Eye.” Gladys Knight and The Pips- and Gladys Knight had 42 Hot 100 singles from 1961-96, 27 of those singles made the Top 40. It was really and up and down career as far as the hits go-their first two Top 40 hits came in 1961 and then there wasn’t a Top 40 hit until 1967 and a song named “I Heard It Through The Grapevine” which went to #2- the next year Marvin Gaye would rework the same song and it would go to #1. Gladys Knight and The Pips were at the peak of their popularity in 1973 with 5 Top 40 hits including a #1- “Midnight Train To Georgia.” Gladys Knight and The Pips were an R&B family group from Atlanta formed in 1952 when Gladys was only eight years old- made up of a brother and sister of Gladys’s and cousins. “Didn’t You Cry” wasn’t a hit – it peaked at #63 and spent 7 weeks in the Hot 100. They would have a couple Top 40 hits later in 1969. My mother-in-law met Gladys on an airplane once and said she was very nice- which doesn’t surprise me. At the past Super Bowl which was in her Atlanta- she sang the national anthem- they should have had her as the halftime act- in her mid-70’s the lady can still sing. 124. “Shotgun”- Vanilla Fudge. Atco. Rock. Written by Autry DeWalt. B-side “Good, Good Lovin.” In their career this psychedelic rock band from New York City had 5 Hot 100 singles with two making the Top 40- the biggest hit being a #6 from 1968 “You Keep Me Hangin’ On.” “Shotgun” which is a cover of Junior Walker’s hit- peaked at #68 and spent 5 weeks in the Hot 100. I will take Junior Walker’s Shotgun over this every day of the week. Grade: C-.
Last 2 were great, first not so much
Thee Prophets, forgettable. Gladys, maybe this wsn’t one of her best, but she made even bad songs good. Vanilla Fudge, well, definitely one of their worse efforts, though it sounds like something from a do-it-yourself recording studio.
I like the last one but that said made it 2 minutes in before shutting off.
I prefer Jr Walker on Shotgun…a lot!
