The Sounds Of Summer- Day 6 of 95- “In The Summertime”- Mungo Jerry. Chances are you are like me- the only song you could name by Mungo Jerry is this one- “In The Summertime’- a song you have probably heard hundreds of times. Mungo Jerry wasn’t a person but a British skiffle quartet- and none of them were named Jerry. In the summer of 1970 “In The Summertime” went to #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 and spent 13 weeks on the chart- and has been a song that has never seemed to have died over the years- it is a perfect summertime song- celebrating the carefree days of summer. When I hear it I immediately think of being a kid again- and summer vacation from school seemed like it would never come to an end. It was always a shock when it did. The single written by Mungo Jerry’s singer Ray Dorset would eventually sell 30 million copies – which to be honest sounds hard to believe. The song took Dorset ten minutes to write.
A perfect one for summer… my son has discovered this song and drove me crazy with it…but I still like it.
We have a big drinking and driving issue in NZ. Surprised this song hasn’t been banned since it promotes it.
“Have a drink, have a drive.” As long as it is only one drink should be no sweat, unless you drink a whole bottle in one go. I am not a drinker, so I don’t need one. But I know some people need one to destress. Summer is for desressing.
I’ve heard this song hundreds of times but I must admit I never heard the ‘have a drink, have a drive” line in it until now.
Wow! it was one of the lines I keyed on when it came out, because it was so redneck. But, hey the rest of the song was fun, so what-the-hey?
Great
Loved this song back in the day, and bought this 45 single too.
Great, great song!
