116. “Hawaii Five-0”- The Ventures. Liberty. Rock. Written by-Mort Stevens. B-side: Soul Breeze.  Here is an instrumental I am sure all of you have heard even if you were not a fan of the television show. I doubt I watched one episode from start to finish but the theme song and “Book’em Dan-o” I know. The Ventures were an instrumental group from the Seattle- Tacoma, Washington area. They had 14 Top 100 singles and 6 Top 40 hits from 1969-to 1969- their biggest being their first “Wal-Don’t Run” #2 in 1960. “Hawaii- Five-0” peaked at #4 and spent 14 weeks in the Hot 100. Grade: A.

117. “I Can Hear Music”- The Beach Boys. Capitol. Pop. Written by Jeff Barry, Ellie Greenwich and Phil Spector. B-side: “All I Want To Do.” The song was originally released to little success by The Ronettes in 1966 as a single it charted at #100 and spent one week on the chart before falling off. The Beach Boys recorded it for their 20/20 album in 1969 and they had better success with it as a single- peaking at #24, 10 weeks on the chart. Carl Wilson is the singer of the song.  The Beach Boys of course one of the most successful pop groups in history. They had 4 #1’s – 1964″ I Get Around”, 1965″ Help Me, Rhonda” and 1966 the revolutionary single “Good Vibrations.” Oh the 4th number 1 hold your nose- “Kokomo” 1988. The Beach Boys had 59 Hot 100 singles in their career. They are still out there touring on a regular basis even though none of the Wilson brothers are with them- Dennis and Carl having died and Brian no longer welcomed by the egotistical Mike ‘Help Me Rug Man- I haven’t been seen without a hat on my head in 50 years” Love. Grade: A.

    • Luckily I have never met him- but in seeing interviews and reading a lot about him over the years- he thinks rather high of himself- he thinks of himself up there in the McCartney and Jagger territory…and he has this thing about constantly bashing Brian Wilson. He should thank his lucky stars that he was born the cousin of Brian Wilson -because if he hadn’t been no one would have ever heard of him!

    • I think he is jealous. Brian gets all the attention from the critics- and rightly so. I also just find it hilarious that Love- always has to have a hat on. Your bald we all know it- it doesn’t matter. He started wearing hats all the time 50 years ago- he’s in his 70’s.. we all age. Don’t be so vain!

    • At least he doesn’t wear one of those hats with the long hair glued to it so it looks like he has long hair. lol. Oh, you probably don’t know this but he and Brian were singing together at the Georgefest!

    • Over the years Brian has joined back with the band- most recently in 2012 for the 50th anniversary of the band- they all toured together but then had another falling out and part ways. I saw a fairly recent documentary on Pet Sounds and for most of the doc Mike was being nice with his comments- which amazed me but then towards the end became Mike Love again…. It is funny when Brian came up with the Pet Sounds album- it was way over the heads of the rest of the guys in the band- and reportedly Mike was the most vocal against it- he just wanted them to do the Fun Fun Fun kind of summer songs–now in a revisionist history Mike claims from the get go he was on board with the whole Pet Sounds album etc.. LOL. … you know as I wrote that last paragraph I felt like I was the guy in Juliet Naked…LOL!
