113. “Give It Away”- Chi-Lites. Brunswick, Soul. Written by Carl Davis and Eugene Record. B-side- “What Do I Wish For.’ This was the first chart single for the Chi-Lites an R&B group from Chicago headed by Eugene Record. They would go on from 1969-75 to place 23 singles into the Hot 100 with 5 making the Top 40. Their biggest and most remembered hits were a #1 from 1972 “Oh Girl” and “Have You Seen Her” #3 in 1971. I have a Chi- Lite’s Greatest Hits album- they deserved to have better success on the Pop Hot 1000 than they did have. “Give It Away” their first single peaked at #88 and spent 6 weeks in the Hot 100. Grade: B+

114. “Sweeter Than Sugar”- Ohio Express. Buddah. Bubblegum Pop. Written by Joey Levine and Steve Feldman. B-side: Bitter Lemon. The group that brought us the bubblegum classic “Yummy, Yummy, Yummy” back with another single but this one sunk like a stone on the Hot 100- #96 and only 1 week in the Hot 100. All together the group had 9 Hot 100 singles and 5 of those made the Top 40- with “Yummy, Yummy< Yummy” being the most successful #4 in 1968. Grade: D-.

115. “Aquarius/ Let The Sunshine In”- The Fifth Dimension. Pop. Soul City. Written by James Rado, Gerome Ragni, and Gail McDormont. B-side: “Don’cha Hear Me Callin’ Ya.” One of the biggest hits of 1969 “Aquarius/ Let The Sunshine” in went to #1 spent 17 weeks on the chart and was a single that defined the times. 1969 was the year for the Fifth Dimension- they would have a second #1 later in the year with “Wedding Bell Blues.” Overall from 1967-76 they had 30 Hot 100 singles with 19 making the Top 40. This single was from the musical “Hair.” 1969 was also a big year for the two most famous members of the group- Billy Davis Jr and Marilyn McCoo were married that year and remain married 50 years later. In 1977 they made television history as the first African-American couple to host a television show- “The Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis Jr Show. Grade :A
I like the Chi-Lites, but this one I do not remember. It does not grab me.
However, after the song finished, athe the usual 9 record menu showed up, I found a real rare gem that took me on a trip down memory lane. “Malinda” by Bobby Taylor and the Vancouvers, originally with Tommy Chong on guitar. Man, that was one awesome inter-racial and international group, whose only real hit was Tommy Chong’s original, “Does Your Mama Know About Me?” — a song about inter-racial relationships. A real blast from the past.
The Ohio Express song barely warranted 20 seconds of playtime, and then the Fifth Dimension, with what I believe was the fifth big hit from “Hair.”
What a way to wake up on a Sunday morning! Thank you.
Aquarius/ Let The Sunshine In couldn’t have came out in any other era…
2nd song: “you’re hotter than soup” as an opening line???? ::smh::
Of course Aquarius is Old Gold Classic!
The Fifth Dimension…WOW.
