Actress singer and dancer Judy Garland was found dead at the age of 47 from a barbiturate overdose at the home she was renting in London. Garland had led a troubled personal life- was her death a shock death? I was only eight- I knew her as Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz but knew nothing at that time about her life. The two big deaths of 1969- had to be General/ President Dwight Eisenhower’s and Judy Garland’s. Ike’ was expected though he was old and in failing health for a long time- Garland as troubled as she was- was still only 47.

I was sorry to see Judy go so early. Of course I’ll always remember her as Dorothy, and her singing was very beautiful. Dwight D. Eisenhower, a major figure in history, was someone my father talked about frequently. Thanks for the post!
She looked a lot older than 47 when she passed. All the self-medicating showed…just sad.
I distinctly remember the day Judy died. I had gone to the annual picnic put on by the company my mom worked for, and when we got in the car to go home, we heard the news about Judy’s death on the radio. I felt really bad about her passing away at such a young age.
Such a beautiful voice…
