1969 Song of the Day is “Oh, What A Night” by The Dells. The original version of the song was recorded in 1956 by The Dells- a doo-wop group from a suburb of Chicago. The original went to #4 on the R&B singles chart. Oh, What A Night was written by group members Marvin Junior and Johnny Funches who sang the original version in 1956. In 1969 they redid the song- with a altered arrangement and tempo. The updated Oh, What A Night also had a spoken recitation in the introduction. The new version released in 1969 went to #10 on the Hot 100 and was ranked by Rolling Stone at #260 on their 500 Greatest Songs Ever list. In the new version Marvin Junior and Johnny Carter were the vocalists- Carter had replaced Funches in the early 60’s. Along with their 1968 hit- Stay In My Corner which also hit #10- the biggest hits The Dells ever had on the Pop Hot 100. A great song but it does seem out of place being a big hit in 1969.
Love this song.
Great singing and with a keen passion. Good orchestra backup also.
I like both.
