The Rolling Stones Song of the Day is- You Gotta Move. You Gotta Move is the final track on side 1 of Sticky Fingers. You Gotta Move is a traditional African-American spiritual song- up until The Rolling Stones cover- the most famous version of the song was by bluesman- Fred McDowell who recorded it in 1965. The McDowell track was noteworthy for his slide guitar- and The Rolling Stones version is also noted for the slide guitar playing of Mick Taylor. The songwriting credit was given to Fred McDowell and Rev. Gary Davis-and while they did make changes to the song the original author is unknown. Mississippi Fred McDowell did live to see The Rolling Stones cover You Gotta Move- he died in 1972 at the age of 66.
Thanks for including both versions, never heard of Fred McDowell. Hoping his family continues to get royalties from the song.
One of their more obscure songs but one of my all time favorite STONES songs!
