1969 Song of the Day- “The Thrill Is Gone” by “The King of The Blues”- B.B. King . The Thrill Is Gone was written by back in 1951 by a blues musician Roy Hawkins and Rick Darnell. Hawkins version was a hit on the R&B charts. The song became B.B. King’s signature song- and his biggest hit. It was on B.B.’s Completely Well album. It would also appear on many of his live albums. It was released in December 1969 and went to #15 on the Billboard Hot 100 his biggest pop hit- and won King a Grammy in 1970 for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance and a Grammy Hall of Fame Award in 1998. Rolling Stone magazine placed The Thrill Is Gone at #183 on their 500 Greatest Songs Of All Time list. The Thrill Is Gone has been covered by many other artists but B.B. King’s version is always going to be the go to one.
I dig B.B.King and his sparing guitar-playing, which proves that less is oftentimes more. This tune is an absolute classic.
I got to see B.B in concert once- fantastic. Great vocal and guitar playing on this song!
Saw him a couple of times. Some great music from the Blues Boy.
Like him & George Benson.
