The Rolling Stones Song of the Day is- No Expectations. No Expectations written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards is the second song on side one of Beggars Banquet and was released also as the b-side to the Street Fighting Man single. It is a ballad about loneliness and being left behind. Sort of a Stones tribute to one of their heroes the great bluesman Robert Johnson. Musically the highlight is from one who was about to be left behind-The Rolling Stones founder Brian Jones on slide guitar. Sadly, Jones shortly would be joining the ’27’ club. Stones bassist Bill Wyman summed Jones and his importance well- “He formed the band. He chose the members. He named the band. He chose the music we played. He got us gigs. … he was very influential, very important, and then slowly lost it – highly intelligent – and just kind of wasted it and blew it all away.
Session superstar Nicky Hopkins also is playing piano on this. The Stones rarely played this in concert- and from 1973 until 1994 didn’t play it once- I mention this because I was at the show in Cleveland in August 1994 when they brought it back!
You were blessed to hear this song live after that absence from their concerts. The guitar in this is sweet and so mournful. Such a sad song for all of the reasons…
One of the best songs and performances on one of their best albums. Exquisite slide guitar work. Thanks for writing about it, slicethelife.
