Hans Worst Hits of the 80’s- I Saw Him Standing There- Tiffany. Both Tiffany and Debbie Gibson are knocking on 50 now. In the late 80’s- Beatles vs Stones style debate [just kidding] I was in the Debbie Gibson camp. Tiffany had #1 hits with her first two singles and either one of those could have been the choice her- I Think We’re Alone Now- the cover of the Tommy James And The Shondells 1967 hit- and Could’ve Been. The third single off of Tiffany’s debut album Tiffany was Tiffany Darwish’s brutalization of The Beatles masterpiece I Saw Her Standing There- which she just changed the title of to I Saw Him Standing There- which went to #7 on the Billboard Hot 100. Her debut album went 4X platinum. Every mall rat in America must have owned a copy. Thankfully Tiffanymania was short lived- she had a couple hits on her second album and then faded into oblivion. She is still out there- back to playing malls? She released an album as recently as last year. It still boggles my mind that she had two #1 hits.
After reading your post, I did a quick online search on Tiffany Darwish. It would be sad and frustrating to be so famous at such a young age, only to spend the rest of your life fighting to regain that momentum.
I made the mistake of listening to the video you posted. This song is going to be the soundtrack of my day…
I am sorry for that!… yes i have thought of others in her situation- you peak very young and then its over- and although she continues to play the game it is obvious no matter what she does its over. She had to think my first two singles go to #1- this is going to last forever.
I love your apt description of the “brutalization of The Beatles masterpiece”. The video must have skipped to the next song, which is a brutalization of the Tommy James and the Shondells masterpiece lol. I next “got” Tiffany (or Debbie Gibson for that matter) and never wanted to.
Yes at least her reign of Queen of the Mall Rats was a short one. If she brutalized any more classics it was to a very small audience.
This was near the time I stopped listening to the radio as much…I remember this well, unfortunately.
Same here. I was looking through the 90s #1 songs and so many of them I have never heard or have no memory of- probably by that time the radio was off.
Oh, dear LORD. The Tiffany thing… WTH. She could carry a tune but, other than that…
Debbie Gibson had some actual talent.
I must confess I actually liked a couple of Debbie Gibson songs. Don’t tell anyone!!
Hey. She was cute. She could dance. She had a sweet voice. She was a songwriter & producer. She was a musician. She was a businesswoman…remember her perfume?
I won’t say a word. 😉
What was her perfume’s name? I do remember Michael Jordan’s cologne – I think it smelled like sweat.
Electric Youth
Um, ewwwww…😖😫😵🤧
I accidentally made the mistake of listening to Tiffany’s I Think We’re Alone Now the other day on Spotify because I’ve always liked The Rubinos version and I made the mistake of forgetting how abominable all this shit was. Awful, just awful.
There is no reason why this should have make the Hot 100 at #100 let alone going to #1. Incredible. There is nothing here of value- as far as her version of the song goes.
There will always be followers of Tiffany, even if it’s just for one or two songs.
Just reading your ‘I think I was in the Debbie Gibson camp’ instantly made this post priceless. Oh yes, I was in her camp as well. Haha
Thank you! LOL.
God I had to stop after a minute. Good voice. Too bad she couldn’t write or get a good writer. Just lame covers and playing in malls. She and Debbie Gibson almost 50 – feeling old
