- THE KINKS: WORD OF MOUTH: 1984: 3 1/2 STARS OUT OF 5 STARS: The Kinks were busy in the early to mid-80’s- Do It Again just missed the Top 40 in the US #41. Years later Dave Davies- “Living On A Thin Line” would be played on The Sopranos and would be one of the most asked about songs from the show. Terrible album cover- decent album.

- MILES DAVIS: KIND OF BLUE: 1959: 5 STARS OUT OF 5 STARS: The biggest selling jazz album of all time and one of the most acclaimed and influential recordings ever. It has sold at least 4 million copies. John Coltrane plays tenor sax. It is a great sounding album. It is on the 1001 albums to hear list.

- HARRY NILSSON: DUIT ON MON DEI: 1975: 2 1/2 STARS OUT OF 5 STARS: Up to this point Nilsson was pretty consistent- consistently good to great- this one is merely average. Nilsson wanted to call the album God’s Greatest Hits but RCA didn’t approve. No real standout memorable Nilsson songs on this one.

- NICK DRAKE: BRYTER LAYER: 1971: 5 STARS OUT OF 5 STARS: Drake made only three albums in his life- this was the second. Like most of his work very melancholy. Richard Thompson and John Cale appear on the album. Favorites- Northern Sky, One Of These Things First, At The Chime Of A City Clock and Poor Boy. Listed among the 1001 Albums to hear list.

- BUDDY HOLLY: GOLD: DISC 1: 2006: 5 STARS OUT OF 5 STARS: One the 60th anniversary of ‘the day the music died” I had to listen to some of the great Buddy Holly. My nominee for greatest rock and roll loss- as far as untapped potential.
- BUDDY HOLLY: GOLD: DISC 2: 2006: 5 STARS OUT OF 5 STARS:
It took a while for me to get into Nick Drake. I think he is great and his songs are so interesting. but I can’t just listen to him at any time. Great songwriter.
The stereo pressings (incl CDs) of the Miles Davis up to 1992 ago had slightly the wrong speed for the songs recorded in the first session. The tape ran 1% slow, meaning the master was 1% fast, affecting the pitch. It still managed to be massively popular.
Hans, are all 3 of Nick’s on the 1001 list? “One of these things First” is a song that will get stuck in your head if you’re not careful.” wdeod, that’s interesting and troubling at the same time about the speed bumps in miles recordings…
Yes all three of Nick Drake’s albums make the 1001 list- which is pretty impressive.
yes, it is!
