It was fifty years ago today- Tuesday February 4, 1969- the day after John, George and Ringo hired Allen B. Klein to represent them- Paul McCartney responded by hiring his father-in-law’s firm- Eastman & Eastman as general legal counsel for Apple Corps. Things were heading in the wrong direction in early 1969 with The Beatles.
“In the midst of all this public bickering, “Let It Rot” was released as a film, an album and a lawsuit. In 1970, Dirk sued Stig, Nasty and Barry. Barry sued Dirk, Nasty and Stig. Nasty sued Barry, Dirk and Stig, and Stig sued himself, accidentally. It was the beginning of a golden era for lawyers. But for the Rutles, live on a London rooftop, it was the beginning of the end.”
Loved that first Rutles movie- They should never have brought in Ron Nasty to manage them.
It’s sad to read this. At the same time, it’s kind of amazing The Beatles were still able to record amazing music.
Agree- to think they put it all together one more time to make Abbey Road that summer.
Wow, didn’t take long, like five years or so after they hit the big time, for everyone to start covering their own butts, huh? Makes you wonder how The Stones, ZZ Top, Aerosmith, the Who kept it together without all that drama. I mean, yeah, there’s only two guys left in the Who, but legality didn’t separate them. Only death did.
